Mark's slump showed little sign of ending against a competent opponent. We need to see the smile on his face again to know that he's still enjoying his pool... ...the wins will follow!

Match #11 vs Kellys, 11/10/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) lost 2 - 3 against (SL4)
A very good SL4 but Mark certainly had his chances. I think that the cigar smoking was a distraction but we need to reinstall Marks confidence just like we did with Sparky during the last session. The rot won't last forever!

Match #9 vs Mulligan's, 10/27/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) lost 2 - 2 against (SL3)

Match #6 vs 2's and 3's, 10/06/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) lost 2 - 2 against (SL3)
Although Mark made a great start to move out to a 2-0 lead, his opponent never gave up and a run of defensive / lucky shots eventually helped him claw his way back and then close out the match with a very good clearance. Unfortunately for Mark this was just a case of an ex SL4 playing like one as an SL3.

Match #5 vs Mulligan's 2, 09/29/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) lost 3 - 4 against (SL5)
Another very close match. The highlight without doubt was Mark's break and almost run, getting to the 8 ball before narrowly missing in the corner pocket. Later in that rack, Mark was forced to play a fantastic length of table kick to correctly sink the 8 ball in the centre pocket and take the match to hill / hill also. In the final rack, a very slightly under-hit defensive shot gave the match to his opponent with ball in hand and just 3 balls on the table.

Shot Of The Night: Marks fantastic length of table kick to correctly sink the 8 ball in the centre pocket.

Match #2 vs Bondy's Chippers, 09/25/04, Tri-Cup (Secaucus), Summer '04
Mark (SL5) won 4 - 3 against (SL5)

Match #4 vs Louise and Jerry's, 09/22/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) won 4 - 2 against (SL4)
The match of the night and in truth, there was nothing between these two in terms of ability so definitely an under ranked SL4. Having won the first rack, Mark was then unfortunate to see the white drop with only a couple of balls left for a two rack lead. With ball in hand his opponent levelled the scores. Rack three went Mark's way thanks to a shot of the night candidate in potting a stripe in the bottom corner pocket and drawing the white ball into another stripe frozen to the black leaving himself perfectly on that stripe. Mark won the rack from that visit and was again ahead. Having lost the fourth, Mark again went ahead with a nice run out and then in the last, having played 4 excellent balls to leave himself a tricky 8 ball for the match it somehow stayed out. Fortunately, it was frozen to the cushion with the white the other side of the table and in making a very fine cut, his opponent then watched as the white ball dropped in the opposite pocket.

Shot Of The Night: Mark's pot of the stripe in the bottom corner with draw to send the white ball into another stripe frozen to the black leaving himself perfectly on that stripe.

Match #3 vs Rascals, 09/15/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) lost 3 - 0 against (SL4)
Next up was Mark Lavery and The Rascals responded with Matt Hummers (4). Mark played some good shots but came up just short in each rack. Mark's opponent played very well. There was however one tremendous shot of the night contender from Mark with the finest of cuts into the middle sending the White through a cluster of his opponent's balls, round the table dropping it perfectly onto the black. A bit of a shame that he completely missed the desired pocket to put the black in the wrong bag! However ...[br/] New category - most flippant shot of the night.[br/] Anyone remember this one?[br/] Mark L with an array of possible balls to aim at banked the white ball across the width of the table to play a plany into the center pocket. Delightful shot!

Match #2 vs Stone Shooters, 09/08/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) lost 1 - 3 against (SL4)
All four racks could have gone either way and both players were certainly at the top of their games. In the end the 8 break in rack three with the scores level was probably the defining moment. Still, if Mark plays the way he did all season then he'll definitely win more then he will lose.

Match #1 vs Be Rude Not 2, 09/01/04, Wednesday League, Fall '04
Mark (SL5) won 4 - 1 against (SL4)
Strangely enough, exactly the same start as last season with one of our SL5s playing the first match and winning 4-1 against an SL4!. In truth, Mark's opponent gave him a huge advantage by sinking two early 8's at a time when he was starting to show signs of coming back from an 0-3 deficit. Although not a fluent performance Mark was certainly good value for the win in the end. An excellent start to the season.

Match #14 vs Any Given Wednesday, 08/18/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL5) lost 2 - 3 against (SL4)
From watching Mark's opponent in practice, a close match was always on the cards and so it proved with just about every rack going to the wire. In the end some bad luck and a few mistakes cost Mark the match. At one point Mark was probably wondering if his last memory of the season was going to be the 8 ball miss in rack 5 but fortunately the night got much better for all of us. Mark's out next week so a big thank you from all the team for an excellent contribution this season. Let's see if we can get his name on the wall for when he returns.

Match #12 vs Be Rude Not 2, 08/04/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL5) won 4 - 2 against (SL5)
A great match between two VERY evenly matched SL5s, we were all glued to this one!. After winning the first rack in real style Mark somehow contrived to miss an easy 8 ball twice in rack two and let the pendulum swing back to his opponent. In the third rack, a fluked stripe by Tristan put him on for a seemingly easy run out until he scratched on his final ball! With ball in hand, Mark made his last solid and the 8 ball to again take the lead. Tristan took the next to again level the match but two very close racks that both went Mark's way got him over the line. Two fantastic shots to mention:[br/] The incredibly simple snooker in rack five when a shot was on. Just a little touch on his penultimate stripe ensured Mark was going to have ball in hand with two stripes remaining and an open black. So easy and yet so effective.[br/] The thin cut on the purple solid in rack one taking the cue ball twice across the table to finish plum on the black.

Shot Of The Night: Being a defensive player, I have to go for Mark's incredibly simple snooker in rack five when a shot was on. Just a little touch on his penultimate stripe ensured Mark was going to have ball in hand with two stripes remaining and an open black. So easy and yet so effective.

Match #9 vs Stone Shooters, 07/14/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL5) won 4 - 2 against (SL4)
It seems to me that becoming a SL5 has brought the best out of Mr Lavery... ...I think the whole team is in awe of the fact that Mark now has a defensive game to go with his undoubted potting and shot making ability. For me this was epitomized in the hill / hill rack when Mark, with several stripes bunched up near the bottom right hand pocket, patiently teased out his stripes one by one whilst at the same time leaving his opponent nothing. In fact it needed his opponent, who is a solid SL4, to make consecutive 'lucky' snookers just to stay in the rack. This for me was the match up of the season so far, great to watch and a fantastic result in the end.

Match #8 vs O'Donoghues IV, 07/07/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL5) won 5 - 0 against (SL2)
Mark's debut as a SL5 ended in victory that again, never really looked in doubt. As soon as news of the other matches filtered through and the importance of this point was highlighted, Mark put in an excellent display that included a couple of defensive shots... ...I think he's been watching me, Mike Sean etc.. Good to see that when the going got tough for the team, we have players capable of stepping up to the plate.

Match #6 vs Rogos, 06/23/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL4) won 3 - 2 against (SL4)
Playing a very good 4 Mark got off to a great start in each of the first three racks only to find himself 2-1 behind. Never mind, his opponent duly obliged by scratching on the 8 ball for the next two racks! it made up for their team not ensuring the bar had a bridge! Mark's shot of the night was definitely the long yellow taking the cue ball off the cushion, travelling the length of the table and moving his one remaining difficult solid out from behind a stripe. This took place in the crucial rack 2 whilst being 1-0 down.

Shot Of The Night: Mark's long yellow taking the cue ball off the cushion, travelling the length of the table and moving his one remaining difficult solid out from behind a stripe.

Match #5 vs Ramrod, 06/16/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL4) won 3 - 0 against (SL3)
I've absolutely no idea what Mark's opponent is like because Mark simply didn't give him a chance to show us. Mark was confident before the match and came rocketing out of the gate with tremendous play right from the word go. A six inning schlacking this one that left us all breathless - and his opponent unable to sit down for the next week or so. One particularly nice shot was a 12 ball all the way up the side rail leaving perfect position for the black. And who can forget that other black?

Shot Of The Night: But this one edges it for me - close though. Mark's opponent was lucky to leave the knuckle of the center pocket JUST preventing Mark from having an easy shot down the rail on the black. Mark lofted the butt of his cue to play a gentle masse and got enough of the black to squeeze it into the corner off his oppenents ball. Very very sexy.

Match #4 vs Any Given Wednesday, 06/09/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL4) lost 1 - 2 against (SL3)
Feeling very bitter after watching a three handicap run 8 balls! Although Mark never really got going, his opponent did play a level above himself.

Match #3 vs Bar None, 06/02/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL4) won 0 - 0 against (SL0)
Mark won with a forfeit! They had a player until they realized I was putting up Mark and then he ran home!

Match #2 vs Severe Arthritis, 05/26/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL4) lost 0 - 3 against (SL4)
A story of luck... ...unfortunately against us. We play this team the last week of the season and I've promised Mark the opportunity of a re-match! One amazing shot I would like to mention though is great shot played by Mark in rack 2 to open two solids that were frozen. That was good but wasn't the great shot. Having left himself virtually frozen to one of the balls he'd just split, Mark then thinly hit the close ball, came off the cushion across the table and potted another solid hanging in the pocket. Amazing shot!

Shot Of The Night: Mark Lavery when having left himself virtually frozen to a balls he'd just split he thinly hit the close ball, came off the cushion across the table and potted another solid hanging in the pocket.

Match #1 vs Be Rude Not 2, 05/19/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04
Mark (SL4) won 3 - 2 against (SL4)
The match up of the night and a real contrast between Mark's fluid style and Steve's dogged determination. Mark stormed into a 2-0 lead without Steve getting close but a number of good defensive snookers by Steve tied the scores. It has to be said though that had 'that' black gone in the middle pocket cushion first and with a cannon on Steve's stripe then the match would have been over and we'd already be talking about the shot of the season! As it was it came down to the deciding rack and a fantastic run out by Mark. Anyone remember the amazing cut on the five ball the length of the long rail to get on the black? (the shot before that to give himself a chance of the cut was pretty good also!). Bandit!

Shot Of The Night: Mark's awesome five ball cut the length of the long rail with perfect position on the black.
