Strange match really because in a way people were waiting for the final match. What is clear however is that mini put his opponent under immense pressure throughout and quite honestly had really good opportunities to win three of the first four racks. As it was, his opponent showed his class to punish every mistake made and close out the match. A good lesson for mini here.

Perhaps a bridge to far for our new SL5 against a very good SL5 who has actually spent a long time as an SL6. The constant defensive shots that Marc faced were eventually his undoing.

Yet another hill / hill match!. This time however, it ended up with Marc making the teams first ever non-captain break and run with one of the most casual displays of potting ever seen. Marc hardly looked like he had a care in the world at either 2-1 down or in winning the final three racks for his first ever win as an SL5.

Incredibly after getting to the 8 ball first in the two opening racks Marc managed to scratch. Marc won the next two to get back into the match. Not sure how actually, at times it seemed to be a case of who was trying to lose the most. Anyway, the fightback proved to be a token gesture as the next two racks went to his opponent.

A two rack lead suddenly turned to a 2-2 defeat and largely due to someone terrible bad luck on Marc's part. At 2-0 up, Marc had a shot on the red solid to leave the 8 ball for the match but somehow managed to scratch. In the last, it was then an absolute war with both players moving the balls around the table like a game of chess. In the end a couple of lucky breaks and an 8 ball bank won it for his opponent.

Marc was up next and The Rascals responded with Francis (5). Francis played really well taking the first rack with some very nice pool. Marc never gave up in this match and had a few really nice runs but Francis played one of the best matches I've seen him play and the balls didn't quite run our way.

A great win after being 0-2 down (although the 8 scratch contributed to the 0-2 defecit in the first place!). A comfortable rack three got Marc back in the match and his opponents 8 scratch in the fourth returned the favour and made it interesting. Relief all round when the final 8 ball went down and we escaped with just a 2-3 loss.

It was late and everyone was tired!. Can't remember too much about the match but needless to say, with the match already won then it may turn out to be a 'good' defeat.

Don't know about anyone else but Mini has a habit of looking like he's not playing well and about to lose and then closing a match out. Last night was no different, at 2-1 down it was looking all over but he somehow forced the deciding rack and then an inspired timeout where we agreed to be attacking and go for the 8 ball bank (to leave it over the pocket if nothing else) proved decisive. Shot of the night candidates definitely need to include the length of table kick on the 9 ball to not only hit it but pot it and finish 'plum' on the 8 ball and take rack two!

This was one of those matches where I have to admit, I didn't mind the result. Needless to say that was the sign for Marc to completely blitz an opponent who has been a SL4 for the last three seasons and only just dropped to a SL3. Marc's ability to 'just get down and hit them' (with the balls still going in clean) was making Mike and I laugh on the sidelines!. An impressive 4-1 record for the new kid. Dear Mr Tom Gates... ....please, please, please don't make Marc a SL5 just yet!

Mini (SL4) won 4 - 0 against (SL2)
In truth, Mini's opponent was never going to win this match and although Mini struggled through the early stages due to extreme heat in the bar he eventually ran out a clear winner. I do remember it requiring his opponent to miss an 8 ball with ball in hand which always makes me laugh! One mention has to go out to the worst shot of the night candidate in rack 2 when Mini tried to play his ball over the pocket and completely missed! This followed hot on the heels of his previous worst shot of the night candidate when he aimlessly smashed his last stripe around the table when potting it and finishing on the black would have been easier.

Mini (SL4) lost 2 - 2 against (SL3)
A good SL3 for sure but probably a match that Marc should have won. Mini got to the black in the first rack within one visit but somehow managed to keep knocking it around the table allowing his opponent to catch up and then pot the black to snatch it. In the decider, Mini again got to the black only to see his opponent make a very good four ball clearance including a tricky black that never touched the sides of the pocket. Alas, poor Mini loses his unbeaten record leaving just Sean out on his own.

A strange match against probably their best player. Marc seemed to be cruising in every rack only to throw his opponent a lifeline in each... ...fortunately his opponent only took one of them!. Anyway, we're not talking to Marc any more because he ruined our whitewash!

Match #3 vs Bar None, 06/02/04, Wednesday League, Summer '04

Two new players, both starting as SL4's, one head-strong, and the other a winner... ....get in there! Marc never stopped plugging away in his league debut against a player who really will do some harm over the coming weeks as a 3. Needs to take his time and relax a little more but a nerveless finish in the deciding rack. Whilst Sean and myself were looking ominously at an 8 scratch in the final rack, Marc just stroked it into the middle pocket and avoided the corner with the white.
